OVERVIEW: The L5 Mod 1 is a French surface-launched heavyweight anti-submarine warfare (ASW) torpedo introduced circa 1972. It is designed to engage both submarines and surface vessels from surface warships.

DETAILS: The DTCN L5 is a 533 mm diameter heavyweight torpedo developed in France in the early 1970s by Direction Technique des Constructions Navales (DTCN). The Mod 1 variant is specifically configured for use by surface ships, capable of attacking submerged and surface targets, and incorporates a Thomson-CSF active/passive sonar guidance system. It measures approximately 4.40 m in length, has a launch weight around 930–1 000 kg, carries a 150 kg warhead, reaches speeds up to 35 knots, and has an effective range of about 9.25 km. It was the successor to the L4 and predecessor to the F17.

TYPE: Heavyweight anti-submarine/surface warfare torpedo

FUNCTION: Launched from surface ships, the L5 Mod 1 uses its Thomson-CSF sonar to search in a programmed pattern, then homes in on detected submarines or surface vessels and detonates via contact or proximity triggered detonation.
